Sail ("Sail," "we," "us," or "our") operates the Sail mobile app, a local-only social app for Cape Town. This policy explains what information we collect, why we collect it, and what choices you have.
By using Sail, you agree to the collection and use of information as described here. If you don't agree, please don't use the app.
When you sign up, we collect your email address and username. If you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive the identity information those services share with us (typically your name and email address) instead of a password. Authentication is handled by our infrastructure provider, Supabase.
Your bio and profile photo, if you choose to add them.
Sail checks your approximate (coarse) location to confirm you're posting from Cape Town — Sail is built around being a local-only app, and this check is what enforces that. We do not use your location for advertising, and we do not share your precise location with other users or third parties.
Sail requests access to your camera, microphone, and photo library so you can post photos and videos, and record video "Moments." We only access these when you actively use those features.
Posts, "Thoughts," wall posts, comments, direct messages, group messages, and Moments you create are stored so the app can show them to you and, depending on your settings and the feature, to other users.
Photos and videos you upload are automatically scanned on our own servers to detect content that violates our guidelines (for example, explicit imagery) before they're allowed to be posted. This scanning happens on our infrastructure — images are not sent to a third party for this purpose.
If you enable notifications, your device registers a push token with Apple (APNs) or Google (Firebase Cloud Messaging) so we can deliver notifications to you. We do not have access to notifications sent to other apps on your device.
We collect basic usage events (such as which screens you visit) sent directly to our own servers, along with a device type and a randomly generated session identifier. We do not use any third-party analytics or advertising SDKs — this data goes to Sail's own infrastructure only, and is used to understand how the app is used and to fix problems.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for third-party advertising.
We share information only where necessary to run the app:
Other Sail users can see content you choose to share with them (posts, comments, wall posts, DMs) according to the app's normal sharing rules — for example, a DM is only visible to its participants.
We may also disclose information if required to by law, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of Sail, our users, or others.
We keep your information for as long as your account is active. If you delete a post, Moment, or message, it's removed from the app. If you delete your account, your data is permanently removed, as described below.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights to access, correct, or delete your personal information — contact us using the details below to exercise these.
Sail is not intended for use by children under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 16. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we'll remove it.
We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, so we can't guarantee absolute security.
We may update this policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we'll notify you in the app or by other reasonable means before the change takes effect.
